The BMW E36 M3 has long been regarded as the “unloved” M3 in the United States. Although it paved the way for successive generations of the marque, it was always seen as a bit less than due to the lack of a motorsport-derived engine under the hood. While Europe received a screaming inline 6 with individual throttle bodies and VANOS on the intake cam, the US-market cars were sold with what was seen as essentially a hot-rodded 328i motor. That being said, as time has gone on, enthusiasts have really come around to the E36 as a perfect blend, offering a classic driving experience with more modern reliability and one of the best shapes ever on a BMW. This has inspired some truly fantastic builds over the years, with one of the best trends being the combination of the E36 chassis with the S54 engine from an E46 M3.
This 1997 BMW M3 Coupe is a build just like that. Created by Precision Sport Industries (PSI) in Oviedo, FL, this no-expenses-spared creation has invoices totaling more than $60,000 and is truly one of the most fun cars we've ever had at the Studio. The first thing that grabs your attention with this car is the stunning Gulf Blue paintwork. Originally a silver car, this M3 received a glass-out respray, which pays tribute to the famed Porsche racer cars of the 1960s and 70s that wore this unique color. Aside from the color, the car looks largely stock from the outside, sitting on a set of 17” Style-39 wheels, but what you can only tell when you get up close is that all of the lamps and seals are new, something that any E36 owner will appreciate. The car sits a bit lower thanks to a set of BC Racing coilovers at all four corners. Under previous ownership, the car received full-body paint protection film to ensure it stays looking as good as the day it rolled out of PSI.
On the inside, the standard seats have been replaced with a nicely bolstered set of Recaro Speed V buckets, featuring a combination of black leather and Cloud Gray suede inserts. A set of Sparco four-point harnesses are affixed to VAC Motorsport floor adaptors and a Kirk Racing bolt-in rear half cage. With the installation of the rear half-cage, a MKAH Motorsport rear-seat delete kit has also been fitted, which not only reduces weight but also gives the rear of the cabin a nice, finished look. A three-spoke Sparco steering wheel has also been installed, which brings the wheel a bit closer to the driver, and a ZHP shift knob provides nicely weighted throws. Although this car was clearly set up with a track focus, it retains its dual-zone climate control, and an upgraded Pioneer stereo head unit has been fitted with Bluetooth capabilities.
Under the hood is where things get really exciting. In place of the stock US-spec S52 sits an S54 inline-6 out of an E46 M3. This engine came from a 90,000-mile car and underwent thorough inspection and preventative maintenance before installation, including new rod bearings, wiring, and the installation of a new head gasket. To achieve that fantastic E46 ITB induction noise, a carbon CSL airbox has been fitted, along with headers from Active Autowerke, which also performed the ECU tuning for this car. Power is then sent through the E36's 5-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential.
This M3 is truly a comprehensive build that turns an otherwise fairly ordinary E36 M3 into a unique driver's dream. With a stack of build invoices from well-respected shops and minimal use since the build's completion, this M3 is ready for its new owner to get behind the wheel and experience everything that an E36 M3 can be.
